Celtic Day celebrates Fort William's Scottish culture

Fort William Historical Park saw Celtic heritage, dance, bagpipes and drums.

THUNDER BAY — Celtic Day was a success at Fort William Historical Park on Sunday.

Jennifer McFarlane, manager of marketing and visitor experiences at the park, said it is a celebration of Celtic heritage, dance, bagpipes and drums, with lots going on throughout the park.

“It's a wonderful day for us here at Fort William Historical Park to share Celtic Day with the community," she said.

“The Celtic culture is really a key piece of the fur trade, so we typically celebrate the Scottish partners and agents of the Northwest Company throughout the year.

“We also celebrate the French-Canadian people and Voyagers in February at our Voyager Winter Carnival, and we celebrate the Indigenous people who are so integral to the fur trade as well,” she said.

At Fort William Historical Park, programming for Celtic Day has been going on for the past few of years.

“Many years ago, we used to celebrate Scottish Days here at Fort William Historical Park, and there may have been a few variations of that in between, but really, Celtic Days was important to us to bring back fairly recently again to celebrate all things Celtic culture, heritage, dance, and music.”

McFarlane said she expected to see between 500 and 1,000 people throughout the park.

The Fort William Historical Park will also be hosting some events coming up this fall.

“We will be having an artisan workshop weekend in October, and then we are bringing back Halloween Hoot, which is a wonderful event for families and children, and we're expanding Halloween Hoot this year over two weekends in October.

“Check out our website for more information on those events that are coming,” McFarlane said.
