THUNDER BAY:  Last night, the Federal Government announced that an agreement has been reached with the Provinces to move ahead with national pension reform.

Charla Robinson, President of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce comments, “I am encouraged by the agreement between the Federal and Provincial governments of the need to reform the Canada Pension Plan to better meet the needs of all Canadians.

While there are still many details to be worked out and the increased costs for business is not yet known, making amendments to the CPP is a much better option than the fragmentation and increased administrative burden that would have resulted from the development of separate province-by-province pension plans such as the proposed Ontario Retirement Pension Plan.

Robinson concludes, “Our Chamber will continue to work with our colleagues at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce to provide the input of local businesses into proposed changes to the CPP.”
