Charges have been laid in an alleged human smuggling case at the Pigeon River border.

The incident that led to the charges took place on May 7 when three foreign nationals crossed the river into Canada. They presented themselves at a home near the border and asked to use the home owner’s telephone.

The suspicious resident then contacted the OPP, which led to the apprehension of the trio and four Canadian residents.

Canada Border Services spokesman Chris Kealey said three people have now been charged.

Mukarram Syed Buhkari, Novin Tariq Dean, and Syed Obaid Akhtar are charged with aiding and abetting the illegal smuggling of people, and will appear in Toronto court on Thursday.

The fourth suspect, Shehr Yar, is still awaiting a bail hearing.
