THUNDER BAY -- The Christmas season is over, and it's well known that it can be one of the toughest times of the year for some people.

That's why organizations like the Christmas Cheer Fund gather donations to help those less fortunate. Volunteers filled thousands of hampers last month with much needed food and toys that were given to those who were struggling to make ends meet throughout the season.

Chair Linda Gambee says they reached their goal of helping a lot of families this year, but have fallen just shy of their targets for financial donations.

The number of people who received hampers this season is not known at this time, but officials hope to have a number confirmed next week.

Gambee said she knows considerably more people needed a hamper this year compared to last.

She also applauds the community for responding so well to the numerous charities that ask for help, and says they'll be looking at many options for next year to help reach their goals.
