A former OPP officer has been charged with possession of child pornography.

Peter Williamson, 47, was arrested Sunday Nov. 17 and charged with possession of child pornography after an investigation that began in August.

Williamson was a 13-year member of the OPP. He resigned in July of 2007 after being convicted of extortion and counselling to traffic in cocaine after a sting operation in 2006.

On Tuesday, city police confirmed that they had made the Sunday arrest.

The criminal investigations branch began its investigation in mid August when detectives were notified that the man was possibly in possession of child pornography images.
The investigation led to the search of a North Edward Street home on Oct. 16.

A computer, Xbox gaming console and flash drives were seized and examined by the police force’s cyber crime unit.

Police say they were able to confirm the existence of child pornography images.

The suspect appeared in court and was released with a court date of Dec. 13.
The investigation continues.

None of the charges against the accused have been proven in court.
