THUNDER BAY -- Certain former Crown wards are now eligible for benefits and the local Children's Aid Society wants them to know.

The agency has been able to contact more than 100 former wards between 21 and 25, now eligible for a benefits package since August, but around 90 people still haven't been found.

CAS executive director Rob Richardson said the agency just wants to let those former wards, now adults, now that they can use the provincial program,

"We're just trying to get the message out," he said.

The benefits are for everything from glasses to mental health services.

"I had one youth get his wisdom teeth out so that was pretty awesome," youth and transition worker Holly Rocco said.

"Kids are pretty excited about it."

Richardson said it's the latest of several initiatives from the province to try and help youth after they age out of care.

"When they leave the care of the Children's Aid Society at 18, usually they don't have much in the way of resources," he said.

"Normally they wouldn't have any benefits as a 21 to 25-year-old."

Richardson said anyone interested can call the society at 343-6100.
