Thunder Bay fire investigators believe they have determined the cause of a Sunday morning blaze on Wharton Road.

Fire crews responded to the fire around 7 a.m. It's believed the blaze started when fire from the chimney moved into the walls, eventually spreading to the roof.

The fire caused extensive damage to the home.  The two residents of the house were able to escape unharmed.

Fire Prevention Director John Boorman said these kinds of fires are avoidable. He added that residents should pay extra attention at this time of year to the working condition of Christmas lights as well as keeping a close eye on space heaters and food on the stove.
