City administration recommends $50K for Magnus Theatre upgrades

Work would include repairs to deteriorating exterior wall
City Hall

THUNDER BAY -- Repairs and retrofitting of the Magnus Theatre building in Thunder Bay come with projected price tag of over $370 thousand.

On Monday night at City Hall, council will be asked to contribute $50,000 toward the project.

An architectural firm hired by Magnus conducted a study of the structure's condition last year, setting the stage for a fundraising campaign.

Magnus general manager Miranda Myers said at the time that the building needs to be made "a little bit more modern."

It's a historically-designated facility.

The auditorium portion was built in 2001. Pieces of stucco started falling from its exterior wall a few years ago.

A report to be considered by council states that renovations and retrofitting would "repair air leakage and water damage, reduce energy consumption and address the deterioration of the exterior finishing."

Magnus submitted an application under the city's Community Partnership Policy for financial assistance totalling $50,000.

Administration is recommending approval of funding from a reserve fund, saying the application satisfies the policy's objective of celebrating arts and heritage as a key contributor to quality of life in Thunder Bay.

The reserve fund currently has an uncommitted balance of $51,000.
