THUNDER BAY — It will take awhile for city road crews to begin clearing snow from residential neighbourhoods.
The protocol calls for priority routes to be plowed and replowed throughout the day as required.
In a news release Monday morning, the city said residential street-clearing will begin once the snow has stopped falling, and all priority routes are completed.
These include arterial, collector and transit routes, as well as sidewalks on these roads, and sidewalks in the core areas
The first major snowstorm of the season dumped an estimated 20 centimetres by mid-morning, with up to another 10 centimetres possible before the system moves on.
Strong wind and blowing snow has created significant drifts in many areas, adding to the challenge for road crews.
Sanding and salting on priority routes began at 8 pm Sunday and continued throughout the night.
These operations are expected to continue for the balance of the week, including on residential streets.
