THUNDER BAY -- A boom in the construction of new housing units on the north side of Thunder Bay continues.

The latest project to get the go-ahead is on a vacant lot at John Street and Secord streets.

City Council on Monday night approved a zoning by-law amendment to permit construction of a 9-unit building.

The project will include three barrier-free units.

Neighbouring proper-owners submitted no written comments after the Notice of Application for the zoning amendment was circulated.

However, windows were an issue for city planning officials.

Initial plans for the building included what they described as "a rather small window count and small window size for the mass of the building" on the side facing John Street.

After discussion, the developer enlarged the window sizes and number to lessen the impact on the streetscape and to be in keeping with urban design guidelines.

Commenting on the number of new apartment projects in the city, Building Division manager Des Stolz said in August that "there's a lot of activity this summer with residential units, no doubt about that."
