THUNDER BAY – Despite low rates of snowfall in December, city crews are ready for a much more active January.

Crews will be out more often as snow starts to really accumulate and the city has made it easier for residents to know when their streets will get cleared.

The city’s website now features updates on snow clearing, which roads manager Ian Spoljarich said allows the public to see when crews are out as well as the threshold for when certain types of roads are cleared.

"It's all online now, so when we get about 5 cm of snow those arterials and collectors are cleared, usually between 2 and 7 a.m., so over about 5 hours,” he said.

“Once we hit 10 cm or more that's when we'll be hitting the residential areas. That'll get done within 72 hours of those main roads getting finished.”

With winter in full swing and a lot more snow expected throughout the next few months, calendar parking is in full effect in the city. Spoljarich reminds the community to abide by those signs to make sure crews can keep roads clear and safe.

"Calendar parking is very important so our crews and equipment have the room to clear roads, making things easier for larger vehicles like school buses, fire trucks, and ambulances," he said.

Residents can also visit the city’s website to get answers to many frequently asked questions and learn about their responsibilities when it comes to snow removal.
