THUNDER BAY – Over the past 20-plus years city employees have raised nearly $3 million to support programs and services funded through the United Way.
It’s a total that only continues to grow.
The municipal employee campaign, the largest employee campaign contributing to the United Way, kicked off the 2018 version of their fundraising drive with a Wednesday afternoon luncheon at the West Thunder Community Centre.
Kelly Robertson, the city’s campaign co-chair, said a goal of $146,800 has been set to contribute to the United Way’s overall $2.28 million target.
“It’s a very good cause,” Robertson said. “The United Way funds over 30 agencies that provide 61 valuable programs to our community. They’re focused on allowing our kids to be the best they can be, to build a stronger community and to help turn poverty into possibility for those individuals living on a low income.”
United Way campaign director Jodie Wilson said the success of the municipal campaign is crucial to the success of the broader campaign.
“This campaign is amazing and it touches a lot of different departments within the city,” Wilson said. “Right from the mayor’s office, all of the city councillors participate, we really get a wonderful and beautiful uptake with this campaign.”
The municipal campaign raises money through voluntary payroll deductions, along with dress down days, draws and raffles and other special events held throughout the season.
The luncheon brought together a number of employees from across the city divisions, where they were able to hear from representatives from some of the agencies that benefit from their contributions.
“We’re so thrilled when we have the opportunity to have a funded partner to an event like this because they get to explain why somebody’s donation is important,” Wilson said.
“They can’t function without the good help of people in our community and it’s really nice when they’re able to share their message of how they’re helped.”
