THUNDER BAY — Starting July 1, Thunder Bay residents can recycle additional plastic items.

Until now, only # 1 and # 2 plastic bottles were allowed in the city's recycling program.

The expansion means you can now recycle all # 1 and # 2 plastic coded items, including clamshell containers used for packaging salads, vegetables, berries and pastries.

In an announcement Wednesday, the city reminded residents to continue to check container labels to ensure they are recyclable, and to rinse items to remove any food residue.

Jason Sherband, the manager of solid waste and recycling services, said the community has been asking for more recycling options.

He said expanding the program is an "action item" in Thunder Bay's solid waste management strategy.

"This expansion will not only help simplify what is accepted in our recycling program, but will ultimately result in less waste being sent to the landfill," Sherband added.

Curbside recycling collection continues to take place every second week.

There is no limit to the number of items that can be put out for collection.

Recycling depots are also located at the Mapleward Road landfill, the Mountdale Avenue/Walsh Street depot, and the Front Street depot.
