THUNDER BAY -- The city has now figured out how to cut more than $450,000 from this year's budget.

During budget talks in March, council had directed administration to find the savings somewhere.

On Monday council will hear those savings have been found throughout various departments by implementing a hiring freeze.

It will also shift the two-person physicians recruitment office to the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission and reducing one of those positions to part-time.

Budget chair Coun. Frank Pullia said around 35 doctors have been brought to the city just last year because of the recruitment.

Teaming it up with the CEDC, which also looks to attract professionals to the city, means more opportunity.

"It's an ongoing process," Pullia said.

Preparing for next year's budget, Pullia said there will be more chances for the community to give its feedback before the budget is ratified.

While a zero per cent increase is unlikely, he said councillors are starting earlier this year to try and find savings.

"We need to live within our means and I think council has given direction to find those saving internally," he said.
