City Hall to close immediately

Mayor, city manager say decision made in reaction to premier's decision to close all non-essential businesses; some services will be available by appointment only.
Thunder Bay City Hall

THUNDER BAY – City Hall is closed, effective immediately.

Thunder Bay municipal officials made the announcement on Monday night following Premier Doug Ford's decision to close all non-essential businesses at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday.

“I am aware of Premier Ford’s decision to close all non-essential workplaces in Ontario to slow the spread of COVID-19,” said Mayor Bill Mauro in a release issued by the city.

“While there will be significant economic impacts from this decision, this underscores the importance of social and physical distancing as the single best tool we have to address the spread of the virus.”

A full list of what can and cannot remain open will be unveiled on Tuesday by the premier.

City manager Norm Gale called it a proactive move.

“We are making decisions about city services on a daily basis, and reviewing Premier Ford’s announcement and will await his list tomorrow,” said Mr. Gale. “We are preparing to respond, and will continue to provide service where deemed essential.”

To accommodate the closure, city hall services, including the city clerk's office, commissioner of oaths and marriage and lottery licence enquiries will be available by appointment only at 625-2230.
