THUNDER BAY – The city experienced another active month on the housing starts front.

According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the month of August saw a significant increase in new home builds. There were 26 new single-family home starts last month, up from 16 the year before.  And for the year to date, there have been 134 home starts.

That's a 17 per cent increase over the first eight months of 2011.
There were also 12 new apartment units started last month, up from 10 in August of last year.

CMHC spokesman Warren Philp said it seems builders are responding to the city's historically low vacancy rates for apartments.
