THUNDER BAY -- Historical significance has led the city to expand its search for more boat slips.

The tugboat basin between Prince Arthur's Landing and the former Pool 6 was the preferred option for slip expansion that local boaters have been waiting for. But an archaeological survey done a few years ago deemed the site to be historically significant with a number of artifacts, including a sunken barge, found under the water.

Consultants have that site and two others, deemed confidential until the report heads to city council in July, for the city to choose from.

"There are a lot of sites that are possible but not for that many slips," waterfront development committee chair Iain Angus said.

The report will also include options on what to to with the items in the tugboat basin. It's also possible that development could still happen there but it might come down to cost.

"That's the kind of thing we have to take a look at," Angus said.

Meanwhile a waitlist of boaters looking to have a slip continues to grow.

"There's ongoing pressure from the boating community to expand our capacity to allow them to enjoy this great lake," Angus said.
