City introducing new parking meters at some city-owned lots

There may be fewer parking meters in the city by spring of 2014, but that doesn’t mean there will be fewer parking spots.

There may be fewer parking meters in the city by spring of 2014, but that doesn’t mean there will be fewer parking spots.

The city’s parking authority is preparing to replace single-space meters in a number of city-owned parking lots with one new multi-space meter, which can service an entire lot.

The plan will be unveiled slowly, starting with just six lots, including a couple off Red River Road and at the new courthouse.

Parking Authority Manager James Coady says among other benefits, the meters will mean no more scrambling for loose change.

Coady says they initially discussed replacing even on-street meters with new multi-space units, but decided that would be too costly.

The parking meters carry a price tag of up to $10,000 per unit.

Instead, the plan is to install new single-space meters to replace some of the city's out-dated ones.  But those new units will not accept credit cards.
