THUNDER BAY -- The city is looking into how its community centres operate.
With the exception of three, the city's dozen community centres are operated by volunteer boards. But those boards say the city's bylaws to operate those cetnres are outdated. The boards also say they're having trouble attracting volunteers.
Law changes have also increased liability risks for those boards while costing more money, forcing community centres to focus more on money-making events like weddings and shags rather than community programming.
The city has been looking into its community centre boards since three members of the West Thunder Community Centre resigned in 2014, which closed the centre for several days.
It's also closed North Neebing Community Centre and Jackpine in the past few years. It's also had to step in and run Vale Community Centre and Volunteer Pool after those boards dissolved. The city has always operated Jumbo Gardens Community Centre.
A report will come to city council with recommendations.
