THUNDER BAY -- The city is looking to honour women who have made contributions to the community and needs the public's help.
Starting Mother's Day, people can make submissions for the city's Women's History month online exhibit, which will launch in October. Since its start in 2013, the exhibit has honoured ten women.
"They do have to make a bit of a contribution that can be recognized city-wide," city heritage researcher Pamela Cain said.
Submissions should be around 300 words and include photos that will be part of the exhibit.
The Silver Mountain Historical Society is presenting Dorothea Mitchell, the so-called "Lady Lumberjack", a book about her life she authored, who in 1911 became the first unmarried woman in Ontario to own a homestead.
She was also station master at Silver Mountain, part-time Postmaster, owned her own sawmill and produced three films. Mitchell also gave back to the community, including teaching swim lessons to local children.
"Everybody should aspire to be like Dorothea Mitchell as a woman absolutely," society founder and treasurer Shelley Simon said.
"She was a great woman that did a lot of things, especially for that time."
Submissions can be made until July 1. They can be sent to [email protected] or
