City may have Brodie Street bus terminal replacement

The Brodie Street Bus Terminal will close by the end of March if city council approves a recommendation from transit staff Monday night.

With the South Side terminal being slated for demolition, transit manager Brad Laroff said the recommendation is to set up a temporary on-street system closing Donald Street between Syndicate Avenue and Archibald Street.

Laroff said although it’s temporary, the Donald Street site could remain for a few years until a transit study is completed and those recommendations are assessed. The decision for Donald Street, one of four options reveiwed, was based on operational impact, pedestrian access and safety, security, capacity and logistics.

"What we’re proposing is an on street transfer point or an on street terminal system," said Laroff "We do believe that the Donald proposal is going to be able to meet all of those needs."

Laroff said the Donald Street option, with a series of on street bus shelters, was the best all around option. Laroff said feedback from local business in the area has been positive and he’s confident council will approve the recommendation.

The terminal would close March 29 and the new site would open March 30 if approved Laroff said. Media campaigns would begin to let the public know of the change and transit staff would be on site at both locations to answer questions during the transition.
