THUNDER BAY -- The City of Thunder Bay is getting closer to implementing their corrosion control plan.

An information session was held Wednesday evening at the Slovak Legion.

The corrosion control plan aims to reduce lead levels in tap water by adding a small amount of sodium hydroxide to the city's drinking water.

City officials said it adjusts the chemistry of the water and is known pH buffering agent.

Bare Point water treatment plant planning and research analyst Erin Marcella-Fui said the number one concern for residents is whether they will be able to taste or smell the sodium hydroxide.

“You should not and you will not,” Marcella-Fui said.

“Another concern is whether or not it is safe to drink, so sodium hydroxide is an improved drinking water treatment chemical used in other municipalities as well to treat drinking water and to prevent the corrosion of the infrastructure.”

The addition of sodium hydroxide will be implemented in early 2018.

Another public session will be held on Nov. 9.
