THUNDER BAY – The city is owed more than $2.5 million from 113 properties in tax arrears dating back to 2013.

There are 83 residential and 30 non-residential properties owing back taxes dating back three years listed in a report which city council will review on Monday night.

While the total number of properties is the lowest in the past three years, the amount owed to the city is the highest in the past 10 years.

The highest amount owed is at the property of the former Empire Hotel, which was demolished in 2013 after part of the building collapsed. The property at 140 Simpson Street is listed with arrears of more than $940,000.

McKellar Place Retirement Suites at 325 Archibald Street is listed as owing nearly $410,000.

Nearly $120,000 is owed from 569 Maureen Street, which was also on the list in 2012.

The non-residential properties combine to owe nearly $2 million while the residential properties total more than $540,000.

All figures are as of Dec. 31, 2015.

The properties could go up for sale within one year if the property taxes aren’t paid after council’s vote.
