City police join provincial crime prevention campaign

THUNDER BAY -- City police have joined a new crime prevention campaign.

THUNDER BAY -- City police have joined a new crime prevention campaign.

In a news release issued Wednesday morning, the Thunder Bay Police Service announced it was joining police services across Ontario in supporting the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police’s 2013 crime prevention campaign -- Crime Prevention … It Starts With You.

The campaign’s goal is to raise public awareness about personal responsibility in crime prevention.

Deputy Chief Andy Hay says the campaign aims to teach the public that everyone in a community plays an important role in preventing crime.

"Our officers work hard with members of the community, crime prevention partners, business, schools, and local government to promote crime prevention." said Deputy Chief Andy Hay.

"This campaign is an invitation for everyone to join in making our community safe. The Crime Prevention Council and other community groups in Thunder Bay are great examples of how our community is embracing this concept. Together we can make Thunder Bay a safer community.”

The campaign focuses on a range of issues that police say impact citizens across Ontario including:

  • Online fraud
  • Identification theft and other cybercrime
  • Auto theft
  • Break-and-enters

A crime prevention booklet is available to the public at the front desk of the Balmoral Street police station or may be viewed online at www:thunderbaypolice.ca.
