THUNDER BAY -- A new report by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business ranked Canada's top cities to start and grow businesses in 2016 and Thunder Bay was near the bottom of the list.
Out of 121 Canadian communities ranked Thunder Bay came in at 109 with a score of 49.3 out of 100.
The report grouped 14 entrepreneurial indicators into three main categories: presence, perspective and policy.
The CFIB said that there is entrepreneurial activity almost everywhere, but the report looked at entrepreneurial acts happening in sufficient quantity to be making a difference to the economy at a neighbourhood, city or regional level.
City manager Norm Gale said despite the report, he sees many examples of growth in Thunder Bay.
“We do see growth,” Gale said. “There are new hotels in the city, and new restaurants in the city and more restaurants coming and that is an example of growth. I’m pleased about that, obviously, as residents of Thunder Bay should be.”
Collingwood, Ont. ranked number one on the list of entrepreneurial cities, and Corner Brook, N.L. was the least business-savvy community at 121.
