City set to start compostable leaf and tree waste pickup

THUNDER BAY -- It's the time of year when the last few leaves are falling from the trees, and people are preparing their yards for winter.

It's also the time of year when the city will be making their rounds to pick up compostable leaf and tree waste.

Local residents looking to unload leaf and yard waste should check their waste collection calendars for the little leaf sign. Between Nov. 1 and Nov. 14 the city will be collecting the unwanted waste and turning it into rich compost for the garden come springtime.

The material will be available for people's gardens, free of charge.

Jason Sherband, co-ordinator of Waste Diversion and Recycling says the program has been successful, and seems to be picking up speed.

Sherband encourages people to use kraft paper bags, but clear and decorative plastic bags under 40 pounds are accepted as well.

There is more information on the yard waste collection on the city's website.
