THUNDER BAY -- Another Christmas has come and gone, and the city wants local residents to recycle their Christmas trees.

Collection sites have been set up at 10 locations around the city. The used Christmas trees will be transported to the city landfill, where they will be ground into wood chips. The chips are then combined with other yard waste to produce compost, which will be made available free to local gardeners in the springtime.

The Northside drop-off locations are: Brent Park; County Park tennis courts; Grandview Arena; the John Jumbo Recreation Area and Strathcona Golf Course.

The South side drop-off locations are: The Lakehead Labour Centre; Delaney Arena; the Kinsmen Centre; Westfort Playfields and West Thunder Community Centre.

Residents are reminded to remove tinsel and plastic bags from the trees before dropping them off.

Trees cannot be left at the recycling depots or on the curb.

The drop-off sites will remain open until Jan. 10, 2013.
