THUNDER BAY -- Even though the new courthouse opened last year, the city is still waiting for it to come on the tax rolls.

The Thunder Bay Courthouse officially came into service in April 2014 but the Municipal Property and Assessment Corporation has yet to assess the property.

City manager Tim Commisso said he believes MPAC is waiting for another case in the province to set a precedent.

“There is a very similar property in Quinte in Belleville that is the same kind of size. That was apparently assessed at $37 million and it’s now gone under appeal,” Commisso said.

“I think what MPAC is doing, from what I’m aware and we’ll follow up, is waiting to see what the outcome of that appeal will be.”

City administration officials said they are hopeful the assessment will be sorted out by next year.
