THUNDER BAY — More than 16 months after fire destroyed two buildings containing three adjacent properties on Simpson Street, the City of Thunder Bay has had to step in to demolish and clean up one of them.
The owners of the other two – or their insurers – arranged for demolition and cleanups of those sites.
The August 2019 fire at Simpson and Robertson Streets destroyed 625, 627 and 631 Simpson.
The first two shared a centre wall.
The third (631) abutted them but was not attached.
All three were ruined by the fire.
On Wednesday, a crew hired by the city demolished 627 Simpson.
Doug Vincent, manager of licensing and enforcement for the city, says the cost of the demolition will be billed to the owner of that property.
If the city is not reimbursed, the city will add the owed amount to the property tax bill.
