THUNDER BAY - Following two evacuations at Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute on Wednesday, the Lakehead Public School Board said classes will resume as scheduled on Thursday.

The Lakehead Public School Board issued a statement Wednesday evening advising staff and students that the school will be open on Thursday as scheduled.

“Following further discussions with Thunder Bay Fire Services, Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute will be open for regular classes on Thursday, January 10,” the statement reads.

The statement added that any students or staff who may be experiencing “unusual health symptoms over the next 48 hours to seek medical attention.”

The south side high school was evacuated early Wednesday morning due to a possible gas leak. The Lakehead School Board said the cause of the evacuation was due to a leak in a dilution tank below a science classroom that caused the odour.

Following an inspection by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue and Union Gas, classes resumed at approximately 11:30 a.m. However, the school was evacuated again before 2:30 p.m. and the rest of the school day was cancelled.

The statement from the School Board did not indicate if the cause of the second evacuation was due to the same issue found in the morning.
