Cleanup day at the Marina for International Trails Day

International Trails Day is an annual celebration of trails, trail development, and the healthy lifestyle they encourage

THUNDER BAY – The Waterfront Trail Rotary Community Action Team spent the day cleaning up the Thunder Bay urban portion of the Trans Canada trail down at the waterfront today, in honour of international trails day.

“We thought we’d have this little clean up because this is actually where the Trans Canada Trail runs through Thunder Bay,” said Janine Chiasson, Executive for the WRCAT. “Starts at Boulevard, comes down Court Street for those of you who need a reminder, and down there’s a little trail by McVicar Creek and then all through the Marina and then you get shunted out on Pearl Street.”

International Trails Day is an annual celebration of trails, trail development, and the healthy lifestyle they encourage.

The Trans Canada trail weaves through a good portion of Thunder Bay, with today’s cleanup focusing on Prince Arthur's Landing, Marina Park, and other downtown sections.

Chiasson says that other than keeping the trails clean, they really want the urban Trans Canada trail to be extended.

“It only extends about two kilometres through the marina and Prince Arthur’s Landing and we would like to see it extend all the way to the James Street Bridge,” she said. “Then we would have kilometres and kilometres of trail that people could move through the city in, they could actively commute on them.”

Chiasson says if the trail was extended, it would not only be good for locals in the community but would also be a good attraction for tourism, as she says many will travel for good trails.
