A community centre on the city’s North side has figured out a way to beat the winter blues.

The North End Community Centre held its fourth annual February Freeze on Sunday. The event featured inside and outside activities, all highlighted by a three-on-three hockey tournament.

“You gotta play outdoors. We’ve got the outdoor rinks, they’re here. We’re going to use them,” community centre president Barb Kukko said.

There were more than 100 people out to cheer the kids on, sit by the fire or relax inside with hot chocolate. Kukko figures the colder weather might have kept some people away.

Janet Napash said it was a great way to get her kids outside.

“I think it’s really important for the community because it’s an opportunity for families to come together and have lots of fun,” she said.

Kukko agreed.

“I see all kinds of people I know, strangers, new people, they all want to come out and get together,” she said.
