THUNDER BAY -- Construction of the Prince Arthur’s Landing condominiums and hotel will begin during one of the coldest months of the year.

The city recently issued the building permits for the construction of the parking garages foundation for Delta Hotels and the two condominiums. The expectation is that the construction will begin by next month and will continue throughout the winter.

“I’m not a construction expert, but it was important for the developer to begin in the winter months,” said Coun. Mark Bentz, Waterfront Development Committee chairman.

“They’re going to be building the foundation plus the underground parking of all three buildings. You’ll see that going up early February starting with the piles being driven. The condominiums will go up first and they will begin the second condominium will be just after the first. The hotel will begin in the summer.”

Kathy Ball, operations coordinator for Marina Park, said the construction will inhibit park access somewhat.

Construction in the fenced in area near the former CN Station won’t have much of an impact but that’s expected to change later on during the year, she said.

“Once the main construction gets going, we would like the public to enter the park via the overpass at the far end of the park,” Ball said.

“We’re going to do our best to make the public aware and ensure that they aren’t inconvenienced in any way. Foot traffic will always be allowed. There’s plenty of foot trails. We just want to keep the public safe but still have people utilizing the park.”

Impacts to parking will be minimal as well. She said they will have the boaters continue to dock at the piers. But Ball said they going to be encouraging people to find parking elsewhere and walk to the park.

She added the restrictions will only be placed when there’s a lot of activity such as trucks coming and going.
