THUNDER BAY -- First year students got the lay of the land at the college Tuesday for the first day of school.
No classes were scheduled, but students were given the opportunity to meet their program coordinator, faculty and classmates and learn about what they need to succeed in their programs.
Confederation College president Jim Madder said orientation provides students with opportunities to connect with other students, learn about programs and student services.
“The most important part is connecting with each other,” Madder said.
“The first person the student will ask for help is another student, and if they get to know other people in their classes they’re going to get better support and build their own network.”
Pre-health sciences student Monica Cameron believes orientation is an important part of the school year.
“It’s really important,” Cameron said.
“I’ve never been on campus, so orientation is something that makes me more comfortable with school.”
Cameron added that she doesn’t feel nervous for the first day of classes on Wednesday.
The first year student said she’s excited to learn, connect with new people and create networks.
“It’s less the school part of it and more the making networks and making connections and what not,” she said.
She choose Confederation College because she feels less lecture orientated and more like a community.
Cameron hopes at the end of her program she will be able to go into nursing.
SUCCI will be hosting a number of orientation events throughout the month of September for all students.
