Collins acclaimed regional grand chief for north shore communities

Nuclear Waste and proper ways to deal with industry are the big issues for First Nation communities along the north shore of Lake Superior.

Nuclear Waste and proper ways to deal with industry are the big issues for First Nation communities along the north shore of Lake Superior.

Fort William First Nation Chief Peter Collins was acclaimed Tuesday for another three-year term as the Anishinabek Nation’s Northern Superior Region Grand Chief.

Collins said it is an honour to be able to represent 10 communities and about 12,000 people. He added that chiefs in the group are against the storage and transportation of nuclear waste through their communities.

Collins said he would like the region’s chiefs to have a new mining policy in place in the next six months to a year.

He believes it will help other communities deal with industry.
