THUNDER BAY - Potential improvements to Chapples Park were the subject of a public information session Wednesday night.

More than 100 people came to discuss the future of the park.

Described as a recreation hub for the south end of the city, community members have expressed concerns about the conditions at Chapples.

The project to improve the park is a part of the broader Recreation and Facilities Master Plan which the city is currently undertaking.

Some of the proposed changes include synthetic turf, another access route into the park, trail connectivity, and more amenities such as benches and washrooms.

Corporate Projects Manager Lou Morrow said the proposals could cost millions of dollars. He promises it will be done right with no short-term fixes.

There will be another public consultation in early September. A final report to city council will be presented at the end of October.

If council decides to move ahead with the project, Morrow said there most likely won't be any big ticket items in the budget until 2020.
