THUNDER BAY – A company has been fined $55,000 after a worker was injured on the job nearly two years ago.

Global Recycling and Recovery pleaded guilty to violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act and not ensuring proper fall protection for workers.

The company had been contracted to dismantle and remove equipment from a former mill site on Strathcona Avenue. The worker, who was on the third floor, was pushing an approximately 150 pound metal cabinet through an open hatchway when his glove became caught and he plummeted nearly six metres.

The worker is said to have suffered numerous fractures.

An investigation conducted by the Ministry of Labour determined there was no fall protection for workers while working more than three metres above a hazard.

The company was also imposed with a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge.
