Complaints against city police service on the decline

THUNDER BAY – Complaints filed against the city police service are on the decline so far this year.

THUNDER BAY – Complaints filed against the city police service are on the decline so far this year.

That information was presented in a report to the Thunder Bay Police Services Board during their monthly meeting at the Balmoral Street police station on Tuesday morning.

Chief J.P. Levesque said 19 complaints had been lodged through the first three quarters of the year. He said they usually see between 35 and 40 each year.

“Oversight is a very serious thing,” Levesque said.

“We have an inspector and staff sergeant as well as a couple of civilians who a big part of their job is looking after those investigations.”

Of those 19 complaints, nine were categorized as discreditable conduct while seven were categorized as excessive force.
Six are still being currently investigated.

The final summary of complaints filed against the service will be heard by the board in January.
