A local recreation centre celebrated its birthday by showing off its recent facelift Tuesday morning.
The Canada Games Complex was built in 1981 for the Canada Summer Games. Turning 30, it needed some upgrades to keep up with the changing needs of the community. Although it remained open during the $2.8 million infrastructure upgrades, politicians, employees and long-time members celebrated its grand re-opening Tuesday.
Aquatics and wellness supervisor Donna Sippila said all this week, people can use the facility for just $2. It’s a great way to get active she added. And even if someone has never worked out before, the staff will be on hand to show them the ropes.
"Some of that equipment looks a little bit daunting it isn’t but we certainly have staff who can help them out."
Some of the upgrades include a new accessible front desk area.
"So someone in a wheelchair has access to the front counter the same way anyone else would," Sippila said.
What was once a squash court made way for a more popular activity as well on the second floor of the building.
"We created another yoga Pilate’s type of room up there," Sippila said.
Nancy Elmslie has been a member at the Complex since it opened its doors.
She was one of eight people who were given a special 30th anniversary jacket for their long-term membership.
Elmslie started swimming at the Complex with her husband as a way to keep fit as they got older.
"The water feels great on a cold day so it’s a pleasure (to swim)," Elmslie said.
