THUNDER BAY -- Two-time local federal Conservative candidate Moe Comuzzi says the election of Regina's Andrew Scheer as the party's new leader is reason for excitement.
“Amazing job,” Comuzzi said during an interview on Monday. “He’s an amazing, generous, and thoughtful man,” Commuzi said.
Scheer surprised many this past Saturday, when he narrowly defeated fellow leadership hopeful Maxime Bernier, receiving 50.95 per cent of the votes on the final ballot.
At just 38 years, Scheer has held the Regina riding since 2004, and served as the Speaker of the House from 2011 to 2015.
His platform emphasized low taxes, balancing the federal budget, and protecting freedom of speech.
“He’s promised to unite Canadians,” Commuzi said. “The Conservatives have a new leader and we’re excited.”
When asked if she believed Scheer has what it takes to defeat Trudeau, Comuzzi was confident the new leader could make it happen. .
“Absolutely. Absolutely. Absolutely,” Comuzzi said. “This pain that were facing with the Liberals is temporary. Andrew Scheer and his team will move us forward.”
In his victory speech on Saturday, Scheer spoke with same poise.
“Trudeau’s Liberals are so focused on photo-ops and selfies that they don’t care if their policies hurt and not help the middle class,” Scheer said. “I’m here to tell you that the pain and hardship that the Trudeau Liberals are causing Canadians is just temporary.”
