WAWA, Ont. – Confederation College has decided to close its Wawa, Ont. satellite campus effective in August, citing too small a population to sustain it.

A college spokesperson said the resulting low enrolment in the area was the deciding factor.

“It is not sustainable for us to maintain the physical campus. While we will no longer have a bricks and mortar location, our commitment to the Wawa community remains strong,” said Neil Cooke, vice-president, academic, at the Thunder Bay-based school.

“Students will continue to have access to post-secondary programming online through our distance education division, and we will continue to work with industry and community partners to explore and offer contract training opportunities.”

Cooke went on to say the school does not anticipate and further changes to any of its other campus operations.

In addition to Thunder Bay and Wawa, the college has campuses in Dryden, Fort Frances, Longlac, Kenora, Marathon, Red Lake and Sioux Lookout.

The Wawa campus is located in the Regional Training and Technology Centre and has offered programs in business, community services, engineering technology, health and hospitality and other preparatory programs.

Wawa is located about 480 kilometres east of Thunder Bay.
