CONMEE – Despite the rising temperatures and melting snow, the township of Conmee was determined to hold its first annual winter carnival.
Conmee hadn’t held a winter carnival in 20 years and Mayor Sheila Maxwell said it was time to bring it back and much of the community apparently agreed.
"We've had so many volunteers reaching out to help us with this day. So, I think everybody was just excited to be able to do something,” she said.
“When we do something in the community, it's always something that's a good thing, because like I said, it's not just Conmee, it's Conmee, it's Oliver Paipoonge, it's O'Connor, it's all the communities coming together. Everybody was excited about this and we had so many donations given to us."
Despite being titled a winter carnival, the spring melt was in full effect during the event, so organizers had to think on their feet to make sure there were plenty of activities for those in attendance.
“Everybody knows there's no snow. We know it's melting and our snow sculptures went down to snow painting. So we put some spray bottles out in the snow for the kids to spray,” said Maxwell.
“We just go with the flow here. We're pretty relaxed and everybody's relaxed and like I said, they're all just out to have fun because of the nice weather. We got the fire department using their hose out here. It's kind of a winter/spring carnival right now, but the weather is just gorgeous.”
