The Centennial Botanical Conservatory is reopening its doors to the public Friday.

The facility has been closed for the last year after safety concerns that included falling glass were raised.

Council debated closing the facility after administration recommended closing the conservatory and Municipal Golf Course to save the city money.

However, council voted to keep the facility.

“Thunder Bay residents made it clear that they value this local wonder and want a sustainable, viable facility,” said Mayor Keith Hobbs.

“We heard the message loud and clear and are pleased to be able to re-open the current facility for the 2013 season and will examine additional options going forward.”

Council approved funding for temporary repairs in September 2012. Those repairs are complete, however, the city’s infrastructure and operations and facilities, fleet and transit services departments will make a report to council later this year with options for the Conservatory’s future.

The Tropical House will be open daily from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and available for event bookings.
