Construction of the district’s social services board building is underway.

District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board chair Iain Angus said some of the foundation is already in place.

"As we speak the contractor Finn Way is building the walls in its warehouse," Angus said.

The walls will be transferred to the Brodie Street site and will be installed in the new year. Angus said he hopes the board can move in by the end of 2011.

"Hopefully we’ll move in in December or if we’re tight probably January of 2012," Angus said.

The total cost of the new 54,000-square foot facility is pegged at $11.6-million.

One of the more unique features of the building will be solar panels on the south side. The DSSAB will be selling the power generated by the panels back to the grid.

DSSAB officials say the new site will provide a one-stop shop approach and contribute to the revitalization of the south core.
