THUNDER BAY— Work is set to begin this week on a new animal education facility to be used for the first veterinary medicine program in Northern Ontario.

Lakehead University has announced the awarding of a $12.6 million contract to Tom Jones Corporation for the construction of the building, named Gakina Awesiinyag, which means "a place for all animals" in Anishinaabemowin.

The facility will be located next to the Bora Laskin Building and include learning spaces for students and safe accomodation for large and small animals, along with storage for feed, bedding and supplies.

The university said advanced mechanical systems will prioritize animal comfort, sustainability and operational efficiency.

The Collaborative Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program will be delivered in partnership with the University of Guelph, with the first cohort of students from Northern Ontario starting their studies at the southern Ontario school next month.

"Bringing the program to life has taken years of planning and the dedication of many people," said Gillian Balfour, vice-president/academic at LU. "Breaking ground is an incredible milestone, and I expect construction to spark excitement across our campus community as students, faculty, staff and friends see evidence of Lakehead evolving in new and exciting ways."

In 2027, once Lakehead's facilities are ready, veterinary students will begin receiving instruction in Thunder Bay before completing the program in Guelph.

Other components of the project include renovations to Lakehead's ATAC and CASES buildings to support clinical training, student life, and anatomy/pathobiology studies.

Tenders have not yet been issued for these elements of the project.

The Ontario government is providing $4.5 million for Lakehead's capital build requirements, and up to $10 million in additional funding.
