Construction underway for tennis bubble

Members of the tennis community were optimistic that last winter would be the final one without year-round tennis courts – which could still be realistic.

THUNDER BAY – The long-awaited construction of the indoor tennis project at Chapples Park began this week.

Pasi Pinta, project lead for the Thunder Bay Community Tennis Centre, said the work is now underway. “Well, we’ve got equipment and men here moving soil, doing earthworks and getting the site prepared for the foundations.”

Pinta said the goal is to get as much construction done this year as possible.

Back in May 2022, Thunder Bay City Council voted to support the Thunder Bay Community Tennis Centre's project and the to use of its preferred site northwest of its existing clubhouse and nine outdoor courts

Members of the tennis community were optimistic that last winter would be the final one without year-round tennis courts – which could still be realistic.

“If we're very lucky and the weather keeps the way it is right now, we might have a chance to get close to completion. Fingers crossed,” said Pinta.

Pinta said members of the tennis community couldn’t be happier to see the construction underway.

“It's a great day seeing equipment back, hoes digging and trucks hauling from the site. We're very excited and glad to see construction happening,” he said.
