THUNDER BAY — The City of Thunder Bay and the Friends of Chippewa Park have announced a $2.09-million contract has been awarded to M Builds (NWO) Construction LP to build a structure to house the park’s historic carousel.
“Covering the carousel will give us the flexibility to expand its operating season into the shoulder and winter-time periods,” said Cory Halvorsen, manager of parks and open spaces with the City of Thunder Bay.
He added that the new building will also allow more programming opportunities at the park.
The project marks the final stage in a five-year restoration effort led by volunteers, tradespeople, and artists.
“Placing the carousel into a purpose-built, climate-controlled addition will ensure that it will be thrilling children and their families for decades to come,” said Donna Gilhooly, co-chair of the Save Our Carousel Committee.
The restored CW Parker Carousel will be housed in a climate-controlled addition connected to the Chippewa Park Pavilion. Construction is scheduled to begin in late September and wrap up in May 2026, ahead of the summer season.
M Builds president and general manager Peter D. Belluz said his company is honoured to take on the work.
“This is our opportunity to not only protect the craftsmanship of the original carousel and the artisans who have restored it, but to ensure that the carousel remains a place people can make memories with their loved ones for years to come,” said Belluz.
