The union representing hundreds of Catholic elementary teachers in Thunder Bay says contract talks with the board have hit an impasse.

The union represents around 390 teachers in 18 Catholic elementary schools in Thunder Bay.

Union president Aldo Grillo said they've hit a wall, specifically around staffing issues.

The union has now asked for a conciliator to be brought in to try to resolve the dispute.

The teachers voted 98 per cent in favour of strike action last week.

Grillo would not say whether a full-on strike is a possibility, but did say if talks don't progress there could be some level of job action before school ends in June.

More disruptions to start next year’s school year is also a possibility.

Catholic Board director of education Pino Tassone said he disagrees with the union's assertion that the board has thrown up "major roadblocks" in the negotiations.

He said they look forward to continued talks with the help of a conciliator, and they remain committed to reaching an agreement.
