Anyone out there who thinks they’re the city’s top vegan chef will have a chance to prove it.
Veg Thunder Bay, a vegan education group, and Confederation College are teaming up to host Vegan Iron Chef Thunder Bay in January. Based on the format of the hit show, the competition will feature local professional and amateur chefs showing off their skills in front of a live audience. Veg Thunder Bay’s Maria Talarico said the event is based off of a similar one in Portland. It’s the first time the city will host the event.
“We really wanted to bring veganism and vegan cuisine, we wanted to showcase it to a wider audience,” she said. “We thought this would be a good platform and format to do that.”
Frances Talarico said most people don’t realize how many animal products are in the foods they eat. Going vegan is healthier and is also more environmentally friendly.
“Just to see that we can make small changes to help with the environment or world hunger and of course animal welfare as well,” she said.
Both Talaricos say that veganism is growing in Thunder Bay.
“We can see that there are smaller restaurants that are starting up in the city that are either vegetarian or are adopting more of that kind of cuisine,” Maria Talarico said.
