THUNDER BAY - There is at least one benefit to this recent stretch of cold, wet weather.
It significantly reduces the risk of forest fires.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry on Saturday reported there had only been one new fire in the Thunder Bay District, a small blaze near Upsala that was quickly contained.
They report the forest fire hazard has been dropped to low, with the exception dry pockets in the eastern portions of the Fort Frances District which are still moderate.
There had been 11 new fires on Wednesday before the rain and cooler temperatures.
